Erie Natives ‘In Awe of the Beauty’ of Chautauqua County

Nestled along the picturesque bluffs of Lake Erie in Westfield, New York, Patti and Bryan Boleratz have found their slice of paradise in Chautauqua County. With roots in Erie, Pennsylvania, the couple has embraced life in this vibrant community, relishing its natural beauty, welcoming community and small-town charm.

The Boleratz family, which includes their three children—Miles, Micah, and Malin—along with two dogs, a cat, and a turtle, made the move to Westfield in January 2022. Bryan, a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) instructor, and Patti, a professional face painter and sip-and-paint instructor, were drawn to the area by an incredible opportunity to purchase a home in a lakeshore community. Patti had previously made other trips to Chautauqua County and was glad to call the familiar area home. From the moment they arrived, they were captivated by the region’s stunning scenery and welcoming spirit.

Bryan, who has previously lived in California and Pennsylvania, said he was “in awe of the beauty” of the area when they first made Chautauqua County their home. He not only loved the picturesque environment of Westfield but fell in love with the people and community here, too. For him, Westfield simply feels like home.

“People were so warm and welcoming, very community-oriented,” he said. “So many great small businesses and I quickly realized it’s because this community truly supports their small businesses, which is how Patti was able to fully launch into hers.”

For Patti, Chautauqua County offered more than business opportunities—it became a haven for creativity, community and personal growth.

“Being a creative person who loves learning, this area provides natural beauty in its abundance of trails and an entire community of creative musicians, educators, and artists who are eager to share their skills and lift you up in your passion as well,” she said.

The family took quickly to their new hometown and found great enjoyment in exploring all that Westfield has to offer. Bryan, a self-described beach bum, treasures Lake Erie and the close-knit vibe of the town. Some of their favorite local spots include Barcelona Beach, When Pigs Fly BBQ Pit, and the Westfield Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market. Patti is especially fond of Annex 25, a cozy gathering place that she compared to an artistic Parisian lounge with the warmth of Cheers.

“They’re always glad to see you,” she said.

Beyond Westfield, the Boleratz family revels in exploring Chautauqua County’s many treasures. While they find plenty to do in their hometown, they also like to visit the surrounding areas, especially the natural wonders and small businesses. Bryan said his favorite destinations around the county are the Dunkirk Pier, Labyrinth Press Company (Jamestown), Panama Rocks, The BioDome Project (Jamestown), and Big Inlet Brewery (Mayville), while Patti’s favorites include Lily Dale, the Chautauqua Gorge trails (Mayville), and the timeless charm of Chautauqua Institution.

“Moving here has taught me the beauty and hope of what a community can be,” Patti said. “I feel abundantly grateful to be a part of it!”
